How do you balance kids and fitness?

Its hard to find time to get exercise with your kids - although some may argue that looking after their kids is exercise enough! Only the most highly motivated and organised among us manage to find time to make it to the gym or exercise class on a regular basis whilst the majority end up planning around the children.

The advantages of making time for exercise include:
* regular exercise will help lift the mood particularly for young parents stuck indoors
* it will help you to cope as the fitter you become the more stamina you will have
* you will be setting a positive example for the future

With a only a little effort and planning its possible to find ways to incorporate a workout into time spent with your children. Whatever their age there is a way to find time to fit some exercise into your life.

With a baby

Babies sleep patterns can be unpredictable and can sleep for a few minutes or hours so its best to break exercise into short bursts throughout the day.

* Yoga stretches are an excellent way to de-stress and achieve maximum suppleness and can be done without leaving the room
* Skipping will raise your heart rate and can be completed within 10 minutes.
* Most exercise videos are split into short, workable sections so you can choose whether to take a few short exercises or more.
* Weather permitting a brisk walk with the pram, buggy or back carrier for an hour or so will give you some great exercise, a change of scenery and provide you both with some fresh air.
* Once the baby is old enough you can get around by bicycle which is especially good for toning both legs and bums.

Even if its just for 10 minutes make a resolution to do something everyday and it will only take a few weeks before you start to notice a difference.

Young children

* Take them swimming - It might even be possible to book them into a class while you do your lengths. If that's not possible make sure you keep walking about in the shallows while the kids splash about.
* Do your exercise videos with the kids or join in with the latest craze of dance mats. Kids love to move about to music.
* Try some yoga moves with them - a great way to teach children to slow down. Any good yoga book or video will show you how.
* Kick a ball around outside or play catch ball.
* Take them to the park or playground. Try rollerblading or skating together, or spend some time on the swings too which will help to give your legs a workout.

Older children and teenagers

* Marital Arts often have classes which include both children and adults. These can be great but all round fitness, suppleness, concentration and self-confidence.
* When your children can swim join them for lengths or widths, building up their endurance and yours.
* Sailing and Horse riding are both challenging and a good way to exercise.
* Get the family out into the countryside for hikes for a healthy dose of fresh air.
